The Hungerford Diabetes Center offers classes and individual consultations with doctors, nurses, dieticians, educators, and counselors to help patients manage their diabetes effectively. Patients are treated using a comprehensive team approach which includes:

Endocrinologist
An endocrinologist is a specially trained doctor. Endocrinologists diagnose diseases that affect your glands. They know how to treat these conditions, which are often complex and involve many systems and structures within your body. Your regular doctor refers you to an endocrinologist when you have a problem with your endocrine system.
Nurse Practitioner
A nurse practitioner is a registered nurse who has advanced training and clinical experience. Nurse practitioners take advanced course work in pharmacology (how drugs affect the body), pathophysiology (disease states) and health assessment. The diabetes nurse practitioner focuses on medical management and educating patients on skills and knowledge needed to live with diabetes.
Certified Diabetes Educators
Certified diabetes educators are health professionals who specialize in the treatment of people with diabetes. They help you learn to live a healthier, more productive life with diabetes. By getting to know you as an individual, your diabetes educator can create a self-management plan that works for you...one based on your age, school or work schedule, your daily activities and eating habits-or maybe you have a special medical condition.
Registered Dietician
A registered dietitian is an authority on food and nutrition who reviews your eating habits, age, weight, and activity level and is able to develop a everyday approach to controlling your glucose levels by managing your diet. Registered dieticians also provide medical nutrition therapy for other diabetes-related conditions (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, low blood sugar reactions, and weight management) and other specific needs.
Social Worker
The Social Worker is a member of the Diabetes Treatment Team who supports the patient, family, and staff by assessing the social situation and needs, providing access to needed resources, and assisting with problem solving. Where needs are identified, the social worker helps the diabetes team and patient obtain resources and to work out problems which may interfere with the opportunity to have the best diabetes management.
